One of the greatest questions of all times is how do we choose our careers? Many of us focus first and foremost on how fancy the job domain sounds or how much money it brings. Well, leaving those aside, the first step is to focus on other important aspects that need requisite attention when it comes to choosing a career. These peculiarities are the following:
• The fulfillments brought by the results of a job well done.
• The compatibility between yourself and your natural abilities.
• The attractiveness supposed by the domain activities.
You need to pay attention to the method by which you enable these characteristics. And the good news is that you have from where to choose: a lot of skill and personality tests, asking advice from the people who know you well or simply observing yourself. The bad news is that some of them imply a certain degree of risk. Leaving aside these examples, the best method of choosing a career is clearly experimenting. It is true that it is a demanding job but the advantages are more than clear. It is real life experience that helps you understand your abilities, your passions and the specificity of a certain domain. Experimenting supposes testing activities from different domains and by testing them yourselves you will have a better image concerning them and the way in which they match you.
After doing this, you make your choice, and focus on it. If you experiment enough (1-2 years at least), especially in as diverse as possible domains, you create a certain knowledge which is representative enough for you to realize the type of career that you need. Not having experience means not having a real reference system; hence you might think a certain career is what you like, you might think that you have some abilities and you might have a certain image of a domain. All of these might turn out to be exactly the opposite. This is why many employers say that it is very frustrating to have a big number of candidates who do not know themselves and who do not know what they want. What is best at trying to get as much experience as possible is the fact that you have a whole bunch of different possibilities: internships, jobs, collaborations, NGO’s etc. These possibilities are very useful as their domain is rapidly extending.
The best period to experiment is during college and afterwards. This is because it is a period in which you can much more easily find spare time and in which you don’t need a big income. It’s harder to do these things when you’re in your 30’s, when you’ve got mortgages, taxes to pay and a family to support. So, try to do each thing at its time and do not miss any opportunity that might occur!
