Considering that a cover letter says a lot about each one of us and considering that it is always bets to use one of them, Devseeker offers some insight on how these letters should be formulated.
First of all, there are some general rules:
1. The cover letter needs to be typewritten, and should not exceed one page.
2. The cover letter needs to be concise, coherent and should have no more than 4-5 paragraphs.
3. The cover letter should start with the name of the company.
4. The cover letter addresses the human resources department or the person in charge with employment.
The content:
1. Your name and contact details should be very visible. (Use bold letters and a bigger font size).
2. The way in which you found out about this job and your interest for it must be mentioned since the beginning of the cover letter. Do not be evasive because you are trying to target more jobs simultaneously.
3. Argument your intention of candidacy for the in-question job.
4. Motivate your interest for the specific position/domain (list some of your qualities and some of the relevant successes that you had in the chosen field). Use only positive formulations and do not use in any case negations! At the same time use verbs which describe actions (I intent, I can, I want, etc.) Try to avoid clichés and unnecessary statements!
5. Declare your availability for an interview.
6. Sign and date the cover letter.
Be responsible
By making a clear statement of the problem or the situation, you prove that you understand the needs of the people to whom you are addressing the cover letter.
Be personal
Try as much as you can to avoid starting the cover letter with “Dear Madam/ Dear Sir”. Even though some standard models indicate that it is best to use them, it is not the best way to go about. Don’t use in any case a standard model that you can fill in with your name and contact details.
Go straight to the subject
In an official letter try explaining the situation using as few words as possible. Don’t use a complicated language in order to avoid not being understood. Try to follow these steps:
- Do a list with all of the things you wish to communicate. The order doesn’t matter.
- Use arguments and examples.
- Think and make sure that each problem that you put forward has relevancy. If it does not have a certain degree of relevancy, try to not use it.
- Rearrange your information in a logical order.
