Job fairs usually have two assignments. On one hand to offer job seekers a great deal of information about companies, their employers and working life and on the other hand to provide job seekers with the opportunity to make a good impression and actually “sell” themselves. Usually job fairs are organized around graduations and it is a frequently used method in recruiting young and eager recent graduates.
Considering that during job fairs companies are not trying to sell you anything, the persons with whom you are going to meet at this type of event are not marketing people but people from the Human Resources departments. Their job is more than clear: they are sent to pick up potential candidates or to detect unfitting ones. You would say all right, what I need to do is leave my CV to one of the recruiters. But, the interesting question now is what can you do to set a part from the rest of the candidates?
First and foremost, you need to take into account that even though we may be talking about a fair, it is still some sort of an interview. Hence, you most surely, as in the case of a true interview, have to dress for success. Do not count on only your skills and impressions. As mentioned above you need to make an impression, so don’t walk around in jeans and a T-shirt and hope that they will see how perfect you are for their job offers.
Going further, you need to acknowledge that you don’t have thousands of chances. In order to take advantage of them you need to keep your eyes open and find different information about the companies, even though this means that you need to ease drop on conversations that recruiters have with other job seekers. Find out the graduate program and some job offers. If you don’t get interested in these aspects, and pose some unclear questions, you will lose the recruiter’s attention and interest in you. This is why you have to know how to engage in a discussion and be as complex and as professional as you can. During a job fair, conversation is the best strategic tool that you can use. It is best to have a longer conversation as this might guarantee you that the recruiter will remember you.
At last but not least, you should not forget to gather the necessary information. Do not leave until you have collected some background about the industry in which you are interested, the type of jobs available and maybe some details about the employers. Hopefully, the fair will offer you some insight regarding future job prospects.
