How to emphasize your qualities
Your CV already contains information about your skills, experience and accomplishments. What more about you could interest the employer?
Well, he would like to know if you are a creative person, if you succeed in efficiently communicating your ideas and of course if you know how to promote team work.
These traits are hunted up by all employers, and what better way than the curriculum vitae is there to underline them?
Solve the problems!
Do you remember the fourth grade difficult mathematical problems? They were not a waste of your time, considering that nowadays employers seek good problem solvers. Companies are more and more searching for someone to help them solve the problems as fast, cheap and efficient as possible. Any job requires “impossible missions”; starting with budget reduction and coming to managing crisis situations and projects as fast as possible.
In order to test and analyze your skills of good problem solver, some interviewers might, for example, ask you: “How many blue cars are in India?”. What the interviewer tries to get from you is an answer such as: “Well, there are approximately 1.13 billion people in India; 80 million of them can be under the age of 16 and another 80 million may not have a driver’s license. Consequently, there are 970 million people who might have cars...”. You can go on and on until you reach a result. The number that you get in the end is not as important as the manner in which you have chosen to handle the situation. This is in fact the thing which will ultimately convince the employer that you are the one for the job.
Fortunately, most of the employers will not pose you such questions during the interview. They will prefer to address you more direct questions such as: “Tell me about one difficult situation that you have faced. How did you handle it?” By doing some exercise, this type of questions can be answered quite easily; before an interview try to make a list with at least 10 possible examples of situations in which you handled things efficiently. Remember what the main goal of each situation was, the way in which you handled the circumstance and the motif for choosing a certain way of solving it. By having a list prepared, you will easily and trustfully answer any question.
Communicate!
The best way to mark out is to easily and efficiently communicate. Many job ads emphasize one of their requirements: that of having good public communicating skills. Considering that glossophobia (the fear of talking in public) is one of the most spread phobias everywhere, employers are always in search for people who do not have or managed to overpass this fear.
In order to improve your communicating skills during an interview, try one of the following:
• In less than two minutes practice in front of the mirror the presentation of the former job.
• Ask one of your friends to act as an employer during an interview. Make him ask questions and make sure you answer clearly.
• If you do not understand a question ask the interviewer to reformulate it.
• If you’re feeling agitated and nervous, try to relax and have a deep breath.
• Try to establish eye contact with the interviewer all along the interview.
• And, last but not least, don’t forget about fresh breath!
Do excellent teamwork!
In the book entitled “Emotional Intelligence”. Daniel Goleman, states that one’s success does not depend firstly on personal intelligence, experience or skills, but on “emotional intelligence”, meaning the ability to “read” the other ones’ emotions and feelings.
One of the best examples of emotional intelligence is the ability to do team work. Most companies have at least one employee, hence knowing how to work in a team can most definitely help you get the desired job.
To do outstanding work in a team implies much more than fulfilling your share of responsibilities- it also implies being a leader when you have to, making your opinions known, knowing when to take into account other people’s opinions and knowing how to lead a team to the best results by having conflict-free situations.
In order to emphasize your excellent team work traits, you can prepare a list with all of your projects, mentioning what your personal contributions were in each case. At the same time, it would be best if you would mention if you had coordinated other departments, if you had been a part of any committee or if you had been in charge with any project in professional associations. All of these references underline your interest and involvement.
Accomplish as many tasks as possible!
In an ant colony, each and every ant fulfills a one and only task all along its live: “soldier”, “queen” or “miner”. All of these ant categories have just a single vocation in life. Though, people’s work places are much more complex than that. Businesses succeed if they have profit. In order to have profit, they need employees who are able to fulfill as many and as different tasks as possible, all of these in the same time. This ideal trait is called “multi-tasking”.
Some advice on how to emphasize your “multi-task” qualities:
• Do a list with some of the most significant projects you achieved at your former jobs and put down the variety of tasks which you successfully achieved.
• If you are asked to discuss upon a former project, give concrete examples about how you managed to balance some important tasks.
During the interview make sure that the interviewer understands that you are willing to fulfill a diverse number of tasks and that you do not limit yourself at one or two. This will not only stress upon your enthusiasm, but also the fact that you are interested in taking up a significant position in the company. The candidates who express their desire of fulfilling more roles in a company, are the ones who will certainly be promoted.
