PIO Cards vs. Dual Citizenship for NRIs

An independent article published by IndianJobsOnline.com aims to bring public attention on the Indian Government's false promises. They have misled 15 million NRIs and made their family's life difficult by not providing them dual citizenship up to now.

Indian Government was promising that they will give dual citizenship to NRIs and their families and this discussion has been going on for more than a decade but instead of doing this they presented NRIs and their families a completely useless PIO (Person of Indian Origin) Card.

The Government has announced the launch of a People of Indian Origin Card, which Government claims will allow visa free entry to Indian origin people living abroad and give them all the rights enjoyed by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) including purchase of non-agricultural land. 15 million people of Indian origin living abroad will benefit from the Card.

A PIO card is a complete waste of money and time for NRIs and their families especially for those NRIs and their families who only travel once or twice in a year to India. There are a number of reasons NRIs need dual citizenship and this is because they face discrimination in employment, in applying for loans or mortgages, in their child's admission in a good school, in travelling overseas such the European Union.

A PIO card is nothing but a money making scam; for example, the cost of an Indian passport is Rs 1500 and that of a British passport is Rs 5000 whereas the cost of a PIO card is an astonishing Rs 15000.

We do not want to give up our Indian passports but it is making our lives difficult especially when we cannot have the passport of the country in which we reside. Dual citizenship will make NRIs and their family's life better because it will be easy to travel to many other destinations and hence one can be securely employed in a high paid job anywhere else.

The Indian Government has lied and misled the country and has taken no such measures to help NRIs and their families. NRIs seem to be just money making machine for the Indian Government.

One hand the Indian Government is celebrating Pravasi Bharatiyas Day on the 10th of January to acknowledge their contribution in India and the Indian economy and on the other hand they have no intention to provide dual citizenship to the NRIs and their families to make their lives easier in the country where they choose to reside.

The Indian Cabinet consists of people who do not really understand the real meaning of dual citizenship. We would like to appeal to the Indian public to choose their Government very carefully during the next elections so that this issue can be dealt with very effectively and efficiently.

IndianJobsOnline.com is currently in discussion with law experts on this issue and are considering filing public litigation so as to get justice from the Supreme Court.

The IndianJobsOnline.com team would urge the media to create an environment where this issue can be addressed seriously as it affects more than 15 million NRIs and their families.

London Based NRI Mr. Ujjawal Bhardwaj would like to take an opportunity to thank the IndianJobsOnline team and the Indian media who have given their valuable time and support to conduct this research.
